The march of the machines

Small businesses and sole traders are finding it hard to switch off - because new technology means they are on call virtually 24 hours a day.

The widespread use of handheld devices like Blackberries, as well as mobile phones and laptops, mean many entrepreneurs are now afraid to ignore messages and feel they must deal with them straightaway.

Peter Thomson from the Future Work Forum told This Is Money:

"People do not feel they have to be present physically all the time, but they do have to be virtually present.

"All of a sudden, everything is urgent and must be dealt with immediately."
