Pick your own success
Pick your own fruit has become a massive success story for farmers.
The industry is just entering its busiest time of year - although one Welsh farmer reported a family visiting in January, and hoping to pick strawberries!
Farmers put that sort of behaviour down to the fact there are no longer 'seasons' for foods, with supermarkets importing fruit and vegetables from around the globe so most products are now available all year around.
Pick your own farms, however, are hoping to redress the balance and educate as well as feed families who come for a day out.
Tom Keen, who runs a farm in the Vale of Glamorgan, told icWales:
"It used to be focused on cheap fruit and people coming out to do their own thing. Now it's much more about the leisure industry."They pick fruit and their children learn about the fact that fruit grows in fields and not in supermarkets."
