No change to Sunday trading
Small shopkeepers are celebrating the Government's decision not to extend Sunday opening hours for the big stores.
Independent shops were concerned they would lose even more trade to the high street giants if the hours were increased. Small stores are allowed to open for as long as they want on Sundays, while the big stores are permitted to open for only six hours.
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) welcomed the decision to stick with the status quo.
Spokesman Clive Davenport said:
"Any relaxation in the law would have put immense pressure on many small shops already open for over 60 hours a week in a bid to compete with multiple retailers. It is great news that the Government has listened to the views of small businesses on this issue.“Keeping the Sunday trading laws as they are will go some way to protecting independent retailing and ensuring that the UK remains a nation of shopkeepers."
