Fruity idea

A type of blackberry - no, not the sort you can read your e-mails on - is set to shake-up the market.

A £15,000 grant from the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has helped Hargreaves Plants, based in Sutton, Lincs, develop the new blackberry.

The firm has acquired the UK rights to a US programme to develop the blackberry so it has a longer season.

The fruit, which is expected to hit the market in 2010, will have a longer shelf-life, and it will have a better shape and taste.
