Fair trade for farmers
Two supermarkets are trying to shrug off the reputation that they rip off farmers by demanding a 'fair trade' scheme for their British producers.
Similar to the fair trade mark, which guarantees a fair price for goods sourced from the developing world, Asda and Waitrose want a kitemark showing the same sort of standards have been applied to certain British produce.
Martin Howard, from the National Farmers' Union (NFU), told The Guardian:
"The NFU would welcome a scheme where these kind of principles applied, whether it be a fair trade logo or something similar."
The idea comes as the Competition Commission continues its investigation into the power of the supermarkets.
