Campaign on food tax

A juice bar owner says the Government should put its money where its mouth is when it comes to healthy eating.

Nick Wood, who owns the Fruit Boost juice bar in Liverpool, says legally, cakes and milk shakes are exempt from VAT, while healthy food and drink have the tax levied on them.

Nick, who has promised to cut his prices if the Government removes VAT from juice, told icLiverpool:

"Taxation associated with essential items and healthy food is a very 1950s - 'have lots of sugar and fatten yourself up for the winter' - philosophy.

"The law has to catch up with the market. Cakes are considered to be an essential item for the British public. Milk is the same, so whatever milk touches makes it an essential item, like a fast food chain milk shake. This can't be right."
