Whisky takes tip from wine

A family whisky firm is hoping for the same success as the popular brands of Australian wine, by taking a leaf out of their vineyards.

Wemyss Development Company has been inspired to produce three new whiskies - called The Peat Chimney, The Spice King and The Smooth Gentleman.

The firm hopes that naming the blends, in the same way that Australian wine producers started putting the grape variety on the label, will encourage more people to try them.

Chairman William Wemyss told The Scotsman:

"What we are trying to do is use what the Australian wine industry has learned by clearly telling the consumer what is in the bottle.

"If you put Chardonnay on the label, people know what it tastes like. With our taste description, buyers know it's smooth, they know it's spicy, they know it's peaty, rather than a crusty old distillery label that nobody has ever heard of."
