Supermarket squeeze

The big supermarkets are putting so much pressure on their suppliers that they could be pushed out of business altogether, it's been claimed.

The warning comes from the National Farmers' Union (NFU), which was responding to the Competition Commission's inquiry into the power of the supermarkets.

It says suppliers are suffering at all levels, with some supermarkets charging farmers an annual fee to remain on their books, while others face charges to cover in-store promotions.

NFU deputy president Meurig Raymond told Ananova:

"It cannot be in the consumers' interest for high-quality British food producers to be forced out of business by the abuse of supermarket power."
