Migrant boost for Scotland

Migrant workers, who have been warmly welcomed by small businesses, won't provide a lasting boost to the economy in Scotland, it's been claimed.

Forecasters Ernst & Young said the mostly Polish migrant workers had helped the Scottish population grow and filled jobs in the agriculture, food and hospitality sectors.

But Dougie Adams, from Ernst & Young's Item Club, told The Scotsman:

"It looks like the recent population jump is a one-off rather than a decisive change of trend.

"We expect the inflow to peter out over the next few years - with a gain of only another 5,000 over the next three years."
