The software giant aims to release the new Vista operating system early next year, but is now offering free test versions to anyone who wants to give it a go.

But there are plenty of warnings to accompany the freebie - Microsoft says it should not be run on your main or production computer, and if anything goes wrong during the installation, you won't be able to go back to your former settings.
