What's that in my beer?

Small brewers could soon have to list the ingredients in their beer if food watchdogs get their way.

The European Commission (EC) is currently looking at food labelling, and it's likely that alcohol producers will have to join the rest of the food and drinks industry by listing everything that goes into their bottles.

Big beer producers often add chemicals like the tasty-sounding betaglucanese and propylene glycol alginate, but adding extras is less in common among micro-breweries.

Stuart Howe, from Sharp's Brewery in Cornwall, told the BBC:

"You would only be tempted to start adding chemicals if you were producing on a a vast scale and needed to speed things up - if you have that pressure to be as quick and profitable as possible.

"We just allow the biological process to happen, so you get minor inconsistencies between each batch, but that's natural."
