Roll out the barrel to beat drought

An enterprising whisky merchant has found an innovative use for his spare wooden barrels - rolling them down to south eastern England to help the drought-stricken region.

Euan Shand, from Duncan and Co, says the thousands of redundant wooden barrels could be sold to southerners to catch rainwater.

The company, based in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, hasn't used the barrels for more than 40 years.

Mr Shand told the BBC:

"I saw the plight of what was happening and thought people could use them to catch rainwater for their plants and washing cars. Most of the whisky is out of them although there may still be some dry taste in the wood."
