Pregnancy stress for self-employed mums
Female entrepreneurs are getting a raw deal if they want to start a family, it's been claimed.
Women who are working for someone else are entitled to 26 weeks of maternity pay. For the first six weeks, they receive 90% of their salary, and £108.85 a week thereafter.
However, self-employed mums can only claim the £108.85 a week for up to 26 weeks.
Karen Ritchie, an independent financial adviser, told the Mail on Sunday:
"I set up on my own as Financial Planning For Women only last year, and all my spare money went into that, so I was unable to save for the baby. I will have no option but to go back to work quickly. The most I expect to take off is eight weeks."It's important to maintain contact with clients. You can't just package them up and put them away for two months."
