Government's sustainability plans blasted

Speaking about the report of the Sustainable Consumption Roundtable (SCR), Environment Secretary Margaret Beckett has pledged that the Government will make it easier for businesses to make more sustainable choices.

She claimed the Government is "taking the lead through its own consumption", and is making it easier for firms to reduce their impact on the environment. Plans were also revealed to develop a new consumer advice service that will deliver "comprehensive" advice on issues surrounding environmental sustainability.

However, these plans haven't been well received by members of the SCR. Co-chair Alan Knight believes Government measures aren't going nearly far enough to help businesses and consumers become sustainable:

"The Government has got to stop relying on information leaflets and hoping for the best - and start working with businesses and NGOs to get practical measures into people's lives."
