Bookshops engage in "survival" tactics
Small bookshops are up against it because of the power of the supermarkets - and charity shops.
That's according to Publishing News, which says independents are adopting "survival" tactics.
Its report found shops are actually buying heavily discounted books from supermarkets and then selling them on, as well as reducing the number of titles they carry.
Independent bookstores pointed to the buying power of the supermarkets, online booksellers and even charity shops as their main sources of competition.
But despite the tough market they're operating in, 70% of respondents to the survey were confident they'd still be in business in a decade's time.
