Start up boom ends?

The boom in small business start ups appears to be over, but the market remains strong for new ventures setting up in the UK, according to new research.

There was a 13% fall in the number of start ups in 2005 - the biggest drop in a decade - but survey author Barclays Bank said there was no cause for alarm.

The bank's local business marketing director, John Davis, said:

“The number of businesses started last year moved back to more typical levels after a couple of boom years, the 13% fall in start ups in 2005 in effect is a large drop from a record couple of years. The underlying market in start ups is still reasonably strong, as was evidenced by the numbers recovering during the second half of 2005.

The regional hotspot for UK start ups was the south east, while the north east and Wales saw the biggest drop in the number of new businesses.
