Increased demand for handy businesses
A survey by insurers Direct Line has shown that people under 30 lack basic DIY skills, and significant numbers are unable to hang wallpaper, bleed a radiator, unblock a drain or change a plug, skills which a high majority of over-50s possess. Previously commonplace skills including needlework and household maintenance are no longer taught as a matter of course and this, combined with the cash-rich time-poor phenomenon, has left many unwilling to spend evenings grappling with basic household tasks.
This trend has sparked demand for a growing number of businesses offering handyman services, catering for those unable to perform basic jobs such as hanging pictures, fitting lights and changing taps.
