Intrapreneurship is on the rise
A recent edition of the Times featured an in-depth introduction to 'intrapreneurship' - the concept of nurturing and developing people with strong creative ideas and visions as employees within a company. The notion has benefits for both parties: the creative people can see their ideas made into reality without needing the business nous and the cash to go it alone, and the business benefits from getting the most out of its talented staff instead of losing them to their own enterprises.
Intrapreneurship is already evident in many larger organisations, but it's in smaller ventures - which tend to suffer deeply if key visionary employees leave - that this type of strategy could really make a difference. What's needed to make this happen is more support for small firms to train, develop and mentor their staff - and less of the Work and Families nonsense that makes recruiting staff more of a minefield than a field of dreams.
