Spam precedent set?

Legal news service Out-Law this week has an in-depth analysis of a significant case surrounding corporate spam. It reports on the story of Nigel Roberts, an engineer from Falkirk who won a court judgment against a company's - Media Logistics - breach of the UK's anti-spam legislation.

Although the case was settled in the Small Claims court, the victory represents an important step in the spam debate, with the volume of negative publicity the firm in question has received as a result a key indicator of the dangers businesses face when sending promotional e-mails.

And now, Roberts is working on a 'toolkit' that aims to make it easier for other disgruntled parties to sue businesses that spam them. The kit is being made freely available on his website in a crusade which - based on the amount of media attention Roberts has already attracted - could result in a snowball effect of spam claims.
