Why testimonials attract more customers

By Jonathan Jay

Testimonials from satisfied customers are among the most powerful tools in your marketing portfolio. When you use them properly they can dramatically increase the number of new customers.

Why? They show potential customers proof from an unbiased source that your product or service really does do what you claim it does. Testimonials remove the risk of buying from customers' minds.

So how do you get testimonials from satisfied customers? You only have to ask for them. However, there's a knack to it - knowing what to ask and when to ask.

The best time to ask is when a person has just bought your product or service and is feeling good about it. If you leave it for a week, they might have lost the euphoric feeling they had after experiencing your service. If they say immediately after buying your product or service, "That is the best I have experienced," you should say, "That is such a compliment – could I put that on my website?"

You must get that testimonial immediately – ideally in writing. But remember, it's quite hard for people to go home, sit in front of their computer and type it up and send it to you or e-mail it to you, so you've got to overcome that inertia. Ask them in an e-mail if you can quote them as a testimonial.

Write: "Hi, You said our product 'was the best you'd ever experienced and that it's already saved you thousands of pounds'. Is it okay if I quote you on my website? Just whip me back an e-mail if it's a yes from you."

They might reply and say: "Yeah, go ahead! Put that on the website."

Fantastic – there's your testimonial. You've actually done the hard work for them. That overcomes them thinking, "Oh, what shall I write? How much shall I write?"
