Negotiation tip

How to buy advertising space at discount

You want to advertise your product but you know the rates for space in the chosen magazine is way beyond your means. Plus you worry that you would not pick up enough business to justify the outlay. How can anyone afford such an astronomical rate, you wonder? The answer is they don't have to! Here's how to negotiate a better rate.

  • Pay on time. Gain a reputation for paying your bills on time - media sellers will offer bigger discounts to people they know will pay promptly.

  • Go for series. Ask what discounts they offer for a series. Most people won't commit to a series until they have seen results from at least one advert in a publication. So ask about a 'one-time test rate' - a significant discount for new advertisers. You may have more success if you say you will consider a series if the first advert is a success.

  • Seek out the hidden discounts. Some publications have extra discounts that they don't promote on their rate card. For example, some offer an extra discount for mail order advertisers; discounts for members of a particular trade organisation; discounts for subscribers. If you don't ask, you don't get! So ask an open-ended question: 'What other types of discount do you offer?'

  • Play on weaknesses. If they are a newly established magazine or newspaper, the advertisement sales team will be hungry for business and may be prepared to set the ball rolling with a special deal. However, be wary of paying up front for all your ads in such publications. Instead, agree to pay per issue. That way you won't lose all your money if the publication collapses.

  • Buy big. If the publication specialises in small ads, such as Exchange and Mart, you may find them keen to shift a larger space and will deal. Even if they won't throw away the rate card, there are other ways to get a better price. For example, when you find a copy/medium combination that works, think about increasing the size of your advert gradually. Doubling the size of an advert does not usually cost twice as much. The key to watch, of course, is whether the advert generates double the responses!

  • Display it. Classified sections are effective because your prospect is already looking for what you sell. However, rather than getting buried among all the other lineage adverts, consider placing a classified display advert. The column may be narrow but the cost is usually less.

  • Run out of season. Conventionally, certain times of the year are regarded as 'dead', as far as advertising goes. Such periods include the middle of summer and the run up to Christmas for certain products.
